Hope + Dream + Think + Play

Surrounded by family and love, Kara Lynn Larson passed on the baton of life and bravery at her home in the early morning hours on Saturday, May 28. Kara lived life fully, with a twinkle, generous heart, and unwavering strength. Even during her 14-month walk with cancer, she inspired all of us around her to be more present, spend more time with family, and follow our dreams.
She’s encouraged us to “Wear More Dresses” and “Hope+Dream+Think+Play.”

To honor Kara, Grasshopper & Tumbleweed will be closed on Monday, May 30th and Tuesday, May 31st.

In Kara’s honor, grab a loved one, go find some nature, play, dance, and throw on a dress.
Both stores will reopen with regular hours on Wednesday, June 1st and will continue to be inspired by her vitality.

We’re grateful for her customers and all who’ve found inspiration from her designs and stores. She’s indebted to her rock star staff who are like family, and for their hard work, love and helping continue her vision.

We’ll be planning a “Celebration of Kara” for to all who loved her force of nature to share memories at later date with details TBD and posted on the store blogs and instore.

In Lieu of Flowers, her Family asks that donations be made to the Wilshire Riverside Little League in her honor at www.wilshireriversidell.org/sponsors

In of her final words, she said that she’d be cheering at the ballpark and cheering us all on to follow our dreams.
With deep gratitude,

John, Will(Billy) and the gals at Tumbleweed and Grasshopper

  10. My thoughts are with her family and friends. I remember how kind Kara was when I used to come into Grasshopper with my little guy; she came up to me at a month or so ago and reintroduced herself to me. I had no idea she was ill, and I'm struck by how she put herself out there to be friendly to a near stranger during such a difficult time in her life. I'm sorry for your loss, and the loss of our community.

  11. I remember the first time I met Kara. She had set up cotton sheets as clothesline sand had her dresses in baskets in an open green space. Her choice of colors and patterns were so feminine and unique, we had never seen anything like these dresses. It was morning and the women giggled as they tried on the beautiful summer dresses...I felt like I was in a painting, the way the light reflected on their smiles, the sheets blowing in the breeze as a handful of women in their underwear excitedly trying in dress after dress. And there was Kara in the middle telling everyone how perfect they were. She made us all feel beautiful and perfect.

  12. I am so sad to learn of Kara's passing yet believe with all my heart that she is urging everyone in the Ethers to "Wear More Dresses!"...as for me, my Most Treasured KaraLine dress is the first one I ever purchased, from out of the trunk of her car, in Oakland. I wore it for all 3 of my pregnancies and felt like a million bucks! She made me feel beautiful and I know she made everyone around her feel special. Sending so much love and light for her family. Thanks, Kara, for all the magic. XOXO

  13. I am so sad, my thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family. Kara was the reason I started my business, my very first ever show was Alberta Street Fair, Kara came to my booth, loved everything I did and set up a meeting with me to come into grasshopper so she could start selling my clothes. She was a Friend, A creative spark, a Mentor and I am so sad but so amazed at all the lives she touched! She was my very first wholesale order, she steered me in the right direction and hooked me up with my first sales rep. She was always loving, always kind, and always so supportive. She will be greatly remembered!

Please know that Kara was a source of inspiration to me as a mom living in the neighborhood as I frequented her beautiful store when it opened and for all these years after. She was always so genuinely friendly, smiling and encouraging every time I entered the space. Sending prayers and love to her family and friends

I always compare her eay of running things at othrr stores and they always come up short. She had such confidence and took no short cuts to do things right. She will be greatly missed but I am blessrd to havr knoen her. Big love to her family, friends and staff.

  17. I didn't know Kara, but almost nine and seven years later, I still have the pants and dresses I bought from Grasshopper for my then infants because they were too special to part with. I am a mother, local business owner, in my forties - many parallels and have been stumped today by this news. Things like this leave me so upset and angry at the cruel turns life can take. I will make a point to continue to frequent and promote others to shop at her stores, but I will sorely miss the personal touch that she brought to these beautiful, and carefully curated locations. My love and prayers/wishes for strength to her dear family.
